CONTINUING EDUCATION
We are pleased to announce the next Continuing Education Workshop January 17 & 18, 2012! The CPS Project is thriving, thanks to the work you’re doing! As of December 2011, there are now 676 CPSs who have been certified since the project began!
The day will focus on “Respect” and include networking, an opportunity to share your successes and challenges, direct skills and conceptual training that will improve your ability to partner with your peers in their recovery. We are very fortunate to have Joel Slack, the founder of Respect International as the presenter.
Joel is an international consultant and educator in the field of mental health. His work history includes 5 years as a mental health advocate, 10 years as a senior manager in a state mental health agency and 12 years as an independent consultant and trainer.
He is a graduate of Allegheny College where he earned a degree in International Economics and Business Psychology. In 1998, while living in Sweden, Joel consulted to a regional psychiatric system and conducted training programs throughout the country. During that same year, on behalf of the Center for Mental Health Services in Washington D.C., Joel researched innovative mental health programs throughout the European continent.
Over the years, Joel has served on the National Advisory Councils of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) and Boston University's Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program. Joel has served on several boards including the Global Initiative on Psychiatry, a Netherlands-based international human rights and mental health organization. Currently, he serves on Mrs. Rosalynn Carter's Mental Health Task Force at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Continuing Education Workshops will be held in Room 211 A-B (Professional Sciences Center) in the Jones building at Macon State College, 100 College Station Drive, Macon, GA, January 17 and 18, 2012. Registration begins at 8:30 AM each day with the sessions running from 9 AM to 12 PM and 1 PM to 4 PM each day.
Please return the following registration form no later than January 10, 2012 so that we can accurately order snacks and lunch. (Those of you who attended last January know that we will be well fed!)
I look forward to seeing all of you there!
Anyone certified as a CPS by the GA CPS Project is required to obtain 12 hours of Continuing Education each calendar year. These can be obtained by attending trainings offered by the GA CPS Project and the GA Mental Health Consumer Network through its various initiatives, or other recovery oriented trainings.
Training hours that count toward Contact Hour Credit are primarily direct skills training in CPS-specific topics or peer support specific training. WRAP training, Double Trouble in Recovery (DTR), Peer to Peer Homeless training, Peer Mentoring training and Peer Support Whole Health training offered by GMHCN are considered by the Project for Contact Hour Credit.
Training offered by the DBHDD is not always recovery oriented and so is not always counted. DBHDD training is often clinically focused and primarily for clinical/mental health/treatment professionals. Often, training offered by a particular agency does not necessarily count toward CPS Project continuing education
In order to receive credit hours, the training must specifically relate to a skill set that enhances a CPSs’ ability to partner with their peers in assisting them in obtaining their personal recovery goals or in strengthening their ability to form and maintain peer relationships.
If there is a question about a particular training, the CPS Project Director can assist in determining whether it can count toward credit.
It is the responsibility of the CPSs to maintain their own records for trainings that are not a function of the GA CPS Project or GMHCN.
In order to obtain credit for any Continuing Education, a copy of the certificate for the training must be sent to the GA CPS Project offices either by mail or by fax at 404-687-0772. The certificates will be filed in the personal file of the CPS, and the data will be entered into the CPS Database.
